Carbon Capture Pilot Plants, startups and Amar

Carbon Capture Pilot Plants, startups and Amar

18 Sep 2024

Carbon Capture is an important part of the solution for Global Warming. Today’s blog post highlights the small part we play at Amar in projects in the Carbon Capture area.

There is a range of fantastic technology options being developed for Carbon capture. Some broad categories include Post-combustion capture, pre-combustion capture, oxyfuel combustion, direct air capture (DAC) and carbon mineralization. Irrespective of technology choice, the usual start is often in a University Laboratory. However the challenge is that in order to demonstrate the technology to investors a larger part must be built. This is the challenging aspect of scale up and typically that is when Amar’s involvement starts. Many startups are involved in these innovative projects e.g. Climeworks, Carbon Clean, CarbonCure, Global Thermostat, Svante, Charm Industrial, Heirloom. Most start-ups do not have big departments for procurement, commissioning etc. Oftentimes they are excellent scientists and researchers and the idea may be presented to us at Amar as a set of sketches or flowcharts.

Amar teams can usually translate this into more rigorous diagrams such as a P&ID. Typically there will be extensive back and forth between the client teams and our experts and over time a solid P&ID emerges. Our teams then work with vendors and create a detailed bill of materials. A budgetary quote can be created rather fast since Amar has extensive past experience working on dozens of similar projects. We know intimately the sales teams at manufacturers and can quickly find out the specs or prices of equipment. Over a period of time a detailed quote is made which on approval the project can start to be fabricated.

Typical steps for such a pilot plant project are:

Remember that although Carbon Capture is a new area many of the fundamental equipment is similar to the Chemicals or Oil and Gas industry. Amar has many years of experience working in these sectors. E.g. Look at some of the options for Direct Air Capture: Solid sorbent-based DAC, liquid solvent-based DAC, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), zeolites, amine-functionalized solids, potassium hydroxide-based solutions. The terms are very similar to the catalysis technology world!

Ergo, we have been very much involved in the exciting world of Carbon Capture. Due to client confidentiality, we cannot talk more about the details of our projects on here but remember to reach out to us at Amar [email protected] on your next project at a startup. You will be amazed at what value we can deliver and allow you to focus on the things that really matter for you at the startup!
