Better User Interfaces for Lab Equipment and Reactors: Recent Developments at Amar

25 Jul 2024

The HMI (Human Machine Interface) has been a relatively neglected area in some areas of lab equipment such as pressure reactors. Most reactors in the lab from even 20 or 30 years ago look relatively similar to newer models. On the other hand, if you compare the HMI with other equipment, most users will agree that there is a lot that can be improved for Reactor Control Panels.

We at Amar have been giving this issue quite some thought over the last year. Our goal is to create the best-looking, easy-to-use HMI that actually gives our users pleasure to work with. Here are some of our thoughts:

  1. Aesthetics & Looks matter! Users want an aesthetically pleasing device to work with. Gone are the days when cost and functionality is everything. Before our users come to work they drink coffee from a fantastically designed Espresso Machine, and drive a great-looking car, so why won’t they expect the same design standards from their reactors and autoclaves? We at Amar put this thinking into practice and came up with a new aesthetic control module complete with a powder-coated finish. Below are some photos. Let us know what you think!

  1. User Interfaces (UIs) need to be designed keeping our end users in mind! Often we as designers overlook a crucial element of our end-users data workflow and create UIs that are cludgy to use. For example, not remembering user preferences or too many clicks needed to do a simple job. Users hate this. The only way to get it right is to get our end users involved in the HMI design process since an early date! Drop us a note if you would like us to add you to our early users program so that you are the first to know about our next versions! (sales@amarequip.com). See below for some screenshots of our newly designed UI.
  2. It’s the little things that matter! Well designed logos. Rounded corners. Thin bezel sizes. It’s the attention to detail that distinguishes a great design from just a good one.

  1. Users love Touch Screens! Our new UI has a touch screen and users just love it. We live in a world of touch screens today. From the cell phone, to the Tablet to the Coffee Machine every device has a touch screen and users just come to expect this functionality from lab equipment as well!
